Use Weighted Contribution
If your current grade is 82 percent and the final exam is 30 percent of the course, the current coursework contributes 70 percent of the final grade.
The final exam fills the missing weight. The needed exam score is the gap between your target and your current weighted contribution divided by the exam weight.
Watch for Dropped Grades and Extra Credit
Some classes drop the lowest quiz, curve the final, or add extra credit after the exam. These rules can change the needed score.
When the syllabus has special rules, calculate the standard scenario first, then compare it with the adjusted rule.
Turn the Score Into a Study Decision
A needed score of 68 percent asks for a different study plan than a needed score of 94 percent. The number should shape your time allocation.
If the required score is above 100 percent, the target may be unreachable through the final alone. In that case, check whether remaining assignments or retake policies exist.
Compare a Safe Target and a Stretch Target
A student with an 84 percent current grade may need 72 percent on the final to keep a B, but 96 percent to finish with an A. Both numbers are useful because they separate the minimum goal from the stretch goal.
Another student may need more than 100 percent for the original target. That does not mean the calculator failed; it means the target needs another path such as extra credit, remaining homework, a dropped score, or a different goal.
What to Check in the Syllabus
The result depends on the final exam weight, whether the current grade already includes all completed work, and whether the final belongs to its own category or an exam category.
Before changing your study plan, check final weight, category weights, dropped exams, curves, minimum final requirements, extra credit, and the official rounding rule.
Required final-exam score matrix
The required score changes with both the current grade and the final-exam weight. Values above 100 identify a target that is not reachable through the final alone under a 100-point cap.

A larger final weight gives the exam more power to change the course grade, which is why the first two rows have different results.
When the required score exceeds the exam maximum, check whether ungraded work, extra credit, dropped scores, or a different target changes the plan.
Institutional case: the same letter result can have different academic effects
University of Florida Grades and Grading Policies
The University of Florida publishes grade-point values for letter grades and separately explains which marks are excluded from GPA calculation. It also notes that satisfactory/unsatisfactory work does not carry grade points even though a satisfactory result may earn credit.
That separation shows why a required-final score is only one layer of the decision. A target course percentage may correspond to a letter grade, program prerequisite, satisfactory mark, or minimum exam condition. Those consequences are defined by the course and program, not by the arithmetic on this page.
Before choosing the target field, find the exact boundary in the syllabus or degree rules. If the gradebook rounds only at the end, entering a rounded current average can shift a borderline result. If a final exam has its own minimum, reaching the overall course target may still be insufficient.

Challenging case: a target that changes after one remaining project
A student has an 81.4 percent current average over 70 percent of the course. A project worth 10 percent is expected to score 92, and the final exam is worth 20 percent. The student wants an 85 overall.
- Convert completed work to contribution: 81.4 x 0.70 = 56.98 course points.
- Add the expected project contribution: 92 x 0.10 = 9.20, producing 66.18 points before the final.
- The final must supply 85 - 66.18 = 18.82 points. Dividing by 0.20 gives a required final score of 94.10 percent.
- If the project scores 82 instead, its contribution is 8.20 and the required final becomes 99.10 percent. Recalculate after the project posts rather than treating 94.10 as permanent.
Use the final-grade calculator only after combining every non-final item that remains. Change the target and recalculate to compare plans; one calculation cannot represent several targets.

Build the estimate from the gradebook and syllabus together so the current grade, completed weight, and final-exam weight describe the same grading setup.
- Confirm whether the displayed current grade already excludes ungraded work or treats missing work as zero.
- Enter the final weight from the syllabus and test a realistic score range instead of relying on one exact target.
- If the required score is above the exam maximum, review remaining assignments and ask the instructor how extra credit or dropped scores are handled.
